Meet Rochelle Mosley

Ambitious, resilient and compassionate, Rochelle Jasper Mosley has worked diligently her entire life to become the successful business women she is today. Rochelle is the proud owner of Salon 804 in Harlem, New York City.

Rochelle grew up in the Blackwell public housing project community in Richmond, Virginia. She remembers her home life as being dysfunctional with not many positive adult role models around her. Luckily, for Rochelle, it didn’t have to be many, she just needed one. For Rochelle, that person was Ms. Sharonda Robinson, who inspired Rochelle to be the successful person she is today.

By the age of 17, after having attended Richmond Technical Center, Rochelle became a licensed cosmetologist. In just two short years, Rochelle was a bona fide stylist with a client base of 60 clients a week! This newfound independence afforded her the opportunity to move into her own place and buy her first car. Not bad for a teenager from the Blackwell Projects.

Taking a break from cosmetology, Rochelle went on to pursue show business in Las Vegas. While there, she received a call to come to New York City to model. In 1992, she began her career in modeling.

Throughout the 1990’s, Rochelle’s tenacity and determination paid off, allowing her to rise through the ranks and secure the feature cover model position for Essence Magazine’s 25th Anniversary Calendar in 1995.

Rochelle’s stunning images made her a sought after model that afforded her the opportunity to appear on beauty companies Revlon and Soft Sheen Carson’s Dark & Lovely hair color packaging. Over the next few years, Rochelle used her versatility and bright personality to transition her focus to acting. As an actress, Rochelle appeared in several hit music videos such as Naughty by Nature’s “Feel Me Flow” and Heavy D’s “Got Me Waiting.”

After feeling a sense of accomplishment from achieving her initial life goals, Rochelle ventured back into entrepreneurship. She returned to cosmetology and in 1997 established Salon 804 in Harlem. To further hone her hair styling skills, Rochelle studied and received certificates from highly esteemed industry giants like Affirm, John Amico, The Dudley Corporation, and Mizani. The respect of these beauty brands programs, combined with Rochelle’s expert skill level, solidified Salon 804’s place as one of the most sought-after hair salons in Harlem, serving over 75-100 clients a week.

Salon 804 has been spotlighted in a New York Daily News article promoting the film, “Beauty Shop” starring Queen Latifah in 2005 as well as being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show doing make overs for the less fortunate. She was also a recipient of the Golden Scissors Award for hair color.

Rochelle’s celebrity client list has included tennis icon Serena Williams, to the legendary singer, songwriter and musician, Roberta Flack. Rochelle has also styled TV Judges Karen and Hatchett, comediennes Adele Givens, Sommore, philanthropist, Malaak Compton-Rock (wife of comedian Chris Rock) and hip hop legend, MC Lyte.

For the last 20 years, Salon 804 has flourished, with a brand awareness and reputation that is unparalleled. Rochelle wanted to give her clients the opportunity to have a Salon 804 experience at home and in 2015, with her clients in mind, Rochelle introduced R96, her own hair products line that are paraben and sulfate free. When asked why did you name it R96? Rochelle says “Because it is R to the 96 power … We’re not 100% but we’re darn close.”

Rochelle has willingly shared her knowledge of hair care by offering advanced cutting classes to stylists and is also the proud author of two books: “How to Do Your Hair at Home” which gives tips on how to perform basic hair care between salon visits and “Life After Beauty School” an insider’s perspective offering real life insight and preparation to recent graduates and stylists on what to expect while working in the industry. Wealth building is the key.

A strong advocate for breast cancer awareness in 2012, Rochelle was featured on FOX 5 TV News and in the New York Daily News for her innovative approach of generating awareness at the Salon. For every client who made a donation, Rochelle would attach a pink strand in their hair, showing their support for the cause.

On Rochelle’s 41st birthday, the Salon 804 Team, including clients, completed the five-mile walk on October 21st in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, in Central Park, NYC.

In recognition of breast cancer awareness and survivors in 2014, Rochelle hosted a breast cancer beauty brunch and partnered with Isis Charise, a professional photographer of the “GRACE PROJECT,” who empowers breast cancer survivors through photography.

Her passion to help women is evident as she also supports Style Works, an organization that assists women transitioning from welfare to the workplace by collecting clothes and resources to get them back into the workforce.

Rochelle has made holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas special for everyone in the community and for the past sixteen years Salon 804 is transformed into a dining room and the doors are open to feed the homeless. Rochelle starts preparing for Thanksgiving as early as November 1st – ensuring that all who stop by are able to eat. During the Christmas season, she collects and donates toys for the children of the New York City Administration for Children Services (ACS).

When disaster hit the Tri-State area with Hurricane Sandy, Salon 804 collected and donated several boxes of toiletries for the victims in support.

In this age of social media, Rochelle has now added #turnsmart® to her arsenal of knowledge and encouragement by providing information in the field of personal development via twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.

Rochelle provides her followers with daily anecdotes that challenges them with a variety of tasks like: to improve oneself through achievement of timely and challenging goals; personal improvement; self-improvement and interpersonal communication. Rochelle also focuses on techniques for improving personal creativity through her mentoring program and interviews, etc.

A mother of two, Rochelle always strives to stay active in community affairs and be a positive role model to her children.

In August 2012, Rochelle created the mentoring group, #Turnsmart® Girls, formerly known as Project Gyrlz, a monthly program for young girls between the ages of 12 and 18. In an inviting atmosphere that allows the Girls to speak freely about their fears and dreams in a safe, non-judgmental environment; the primary focus of Girls is to groom the ladies into successful, well-respected young women while discovering their inner beauty and exploring their personal strengths. Rochelle makes sure to instill in the girls positive messages of encouragement by incorporating team building workshops, field trips and guest speakers.

There is no stopping Rochelle’s continuous pursuit of success. “I understand what service is all about and I am here to serve. I feel that I don’t have to worry about what I’m getting. It’s about what I’m giving. I’m just following God’s plan and this is His plan for me. Whatever He lays on my heart, I just move with that. This is not my design. I’m just following a path and I’m gonna ride it until the wheels fall off.”
